When completing any engine rebuild, the block needs to be cleaned. To be thorough, when cleaning out your block, all of the core plugs must be removed to allow complete access to areas that carry oil or coolant. There are a few plug types to choose from when replacing them during reassembly. While the brass plugs cost a little more initially, as most engine builders can tell you choosing them can save you money in the long run since they are unlikely to weep like the zinc coated plugs and do not rust.
The location of almost all of the core plugs is challenging to reach with the engine installed in the vehicle, saving a couple of dollars will not be worth the potential headache in the future. We only use American made brass freeze plugs in any engine we build here, we find them to be the best balance of reliability and price.
